Fall Cleanup Recycling Day to be Held at Irmo High School

COLUMBIA –  Looking to safely clean out unused electronics, paper, household products and pesticides from your home?  The South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) and Lexington/Richland Counties will hold a Fall Cleanup Recycling day on Saturday, October 20 from 9:00am to 1:00pm at Irmo High School, 6671 St. Andrews Road in Columbia.

The collection is for residents of Lexington and Richland Counties. Accepted products include:

  • Electronics such as computers, printers, TVs, microwaves and telephones, with a limit of eight items per household.
  • Paper to be shredded on site, with a limit of five boxes or bags per household.
  • Scrap metal products, including appliances, bicycles, shelving and chairs.
  • Hazardous household waste, including paint, aerosols, fertilizer, fire extinguishers, mercury and batteries, with a limit of eight gallons per household.
  • Pesticides will be accepted from any South Carolina resident or farmer, with a limit of 2500 pounds of solid waste and 300 gallons of liquid waste.  No straight fertilizer will be accepted, except for weed and feed.
  • Rinstate will not be accepted.
  • A hazardous material company will be on site to properly dispose of the materials collected.
  • Materials should be transported to the collection event in sturdy boxes with newspaper stuffed between the containers to prevent spills.
  • Leave items in the original containers.
  • Workers will be on hand to unload vehicles, and citizens will be asked to stay in the car.
  • A representative from SCDA will be on site to monitor pesticide collection and disposal and will have final authority on acceptance of products.
  • Collection events may be cancelled due to inclement weather and will be posted on SCDA’s website (www.agriculture.sc.gov).  Possible makeup dates will be announced at a later date.
