Under the South Carolina Weights and Measures Law, Consumer Services is responsible for inspecting commercial fuel dispensers to ensure they are delivering the correct amount of fuel and operating properly. Last fiscal year Field Specialists visited approximately 4,000 firms and inspected over 57,000 dispensers. In addition to the inspection of dispensers, the Department is responsible for inspecting the quality of petroleum fuels sold in the state.
Field Specialists draw official samples of gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, and fuel oil for analysis in the SCDA Petroleum Laboratory. Those samples are analyzed to ensure that the appropriate ASTM Standard for the particular type of fuel is met.
