Buyer Beware: Changes in Non-Ethanol Gasoline

COLUMBIA, S.C. – As we head into the summer driving season, the South Carolina Department of Agriculture’s Consumer Protection Division wants you to be aware of some changes happening at the pump.

Consumers will no longer be able to purchase “Premium Ethanol Free” gasoline. Ethanol free is available at an octane rating of 90, however this is not a replacement for 93-octane gasoline. In order to be labeled “Premium,” gasoline must have a minimum octane rating of 91.

“We want all petroleum dispensers to be labeled correctly and consistently so the consumer can have confidence in the product they are purchasing,” said John Stokes, Consumer Services Director.

If you suspect a gasoline product to be mislabeled, please call the Consumer Services Division at 803-737-9690. For more information about the inspection services provided by the Consumer Protection Division, please visit agriculture.sc.gov.
