Two of South Carolina’s Favorites Matchup This Weekend

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Baseball and peanuts go together like a ball and glove. South Carolina’s favorite pastime and favorite snack come together this month as the Certified SC Grown Palmetto Series heads down the home stretch, and we celebrate National Peanut Month.

In it’s inaugural season, the Palmetto Series followed the healthy rivalry between the Clemson Tigers and Carolina Gamecocks through all sports where the schools compete head-to-head. Sports include: football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, women’s diving, men’s and women’s golf, and women’s cross country. Fans got in on the action with a canned food drive to benefit Harvest Hope. Nearly 200,000 meals were donated last November in a combined effort between the schools.

Clemson and Carolina will face off in their final matchup of the season with a three-game baseball series beginning in Founders Park Friday at 7:00 pm. Saturday. The teams will play at Fluor Field in Greenville at 2:30 pm and wrap up with the final game in Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson on Sunday at 2:00 pm. Fans can enjoy an extra special treat on Friday as SC Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers will sing the National Anthem and throw out the first pitch.

The overall winner of this weekend’s series will earn one point toward the title. The final point will be determined based on each school’s academic record for this school year, unless the teams meet again in postseason play. The Carolina Gamecocks currently lead the series 8 to 5. South Carolina is home to over 400 peanut farmers that grow around 360 million pounds of nuts each year. Peanuts are the perfect pairing for baseball. And whether you prefer them salted, roasted or boiled, know that you’re enjoying a protein-packed, healthy snack grown by farmers right here in South Carolina.

No matter who you root for on game day, supporting local farms and farmers across South Carolina is something we all can agree on. So look for the Certified SC Grown label where you shop, and keep up with the Palmetto Series has we head into the last inning.
