COLUMBIA, SC– The South Carolina Watermelon Board invites growers statewide to attend the 2014 Watermelon Field Day, Thursday, July 10 at the Edisto Research & Education Center (REC), 64 Research Road, Blackville, SC.
Educational sessions will cover SC Watermelon Board and Association activities, effective disease management in watermelons, high tunnel production and a weather update. Outdoor activities will include field tours of current watermelon research projects, as well as variety trial plots comparing 89 different watermelon varieties. Field tours will also demonstrate inter-planting cotton with watermelon, biodegradable mulch application, and adding microbes to the root zone for improved growth and production. Lunch will be served after the outdoor sessions followed by closing discussions. Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) and Pesticide Applicator License credits will be available to participants.
