South Carolina Commissioner’s School for Agriculture Cultivates Future Agribusiness Leaders
Great visuals of students getting hands-on experience

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Forty-one high school juniors and seniors are taking a break from their summer vacations to prepare for their futures at the South Carolina Commissioner’s School for Agriculture (SCCSA).  Students from South Carolina, Texas, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and North Carolina will attend this summer academic program held July 18-24 at Clemson University.

The SCCSA is a premier summer program that exposes students to college majors and potential careers in agriculture and natural resources. Throughout the week, students take part in academic projects, field tours and laboratory exercises, all while gaining skills in leadership and professional development. Here are some of the hands-on activities:

  • Calving Simulator: July 20 from 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
  • Wildlife Tracking and Trapping: July 20 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Organic Farm Tour: July 20 from 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Clemson Peach Farm Tour: July 21 from 10 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
  • Aquatic Anatomy Lab: July 21 from 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
  • Athletic Turfgrass at Death Valley: July 23 from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

 The program started in 2004 and has graduated over 375 students. The South Carolina Commissioner’s School for Agriculture is a partnership between the South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) and Clemson University’s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences.
